Portoferraio has much to offer in terms of sea attractions, such as city beaches, small natural oasis within walking distance and also some spots for the bravest ones, not to mention thermal baths.
Beside these dreamy beaches, Portoferraio also boasts high natural value baths, built where once the Salt pans were, in San Giovanni. As salt mining halted, it was discovered that coastal water had incredible healing properties.
So, what’s better than relaxing by the sea and enjoying thermal treatments all in the same trip?
The trip could start just from San Giovanni and then continue towards the several beaches that you will find along the northern coast, near Portoferraio town centre. The choice ranges from city beaches like “Le Ghiaie” and “Le Viste”, appreciated by divers for their crystal-clear waters, to other destinations that can be reached just walking a few minutes more.
“Sansone” beach lies between “Capo Bianco” and “Capo Enfola”. This beach is fairly quiet and intimate, with its silvery water made famous by the perfume “Acqua dell’Elba”. A half moon of pebbly beach, with waters to put Maldives to bitter shame.
“Cala dei Frati” beach too consists of white pebbles and white, coarse-grain sand and from there you can actually see the Medicean Fortresses and Portoferraio coast. This beach is really quiet, as the only way in is via the sea – just for the bravest!
“Padulella” beach shows all its suggestive beauty in a blaze of turquoise shades. Wild and never too crowded, even during the high season. It is visible and accessible from “Le Ghiaie” beach.
“Forno” beach, named after the neighboring village, is characterized by pastel colors and a wide range of facilities. “Enfola” beach is rich in contrasts and chiaroscuro effects, with its coarse black sand and crystal-clear sea.
