Villa Romana delle Grotte

Lose yourself in the eternal charm of the Roman remnants and feel the calm lavished by this special place which has been overlooking the sea since time immemorial.

“Villa Romana delle Grotte” is the best-preserved Roman luxury residence meant to leisure of the whole Island.

This magnificent villa, built in I century AD and probably owned by the Consul Marco Valerio Messalla’s family, has always dominated Portoferraio bay from the top of the ridge and still stands the test of time.

There was a frescoed porch (peristilium) that surrounded the internal water tank from which rooms, gardens and thermal baths with frigidarium and calidarium spread out.

 

How to get there

About 5 km from Portoferraio, travelling along the road to “Porto Azzurro”.

From 11th June to 26th August
10 AM – 12.30 PM / 5 PM – 8 PM (the ticket office closes 20 minutes before).

Reduced €3,00 (children from 6 to 18 years of age, students, over 70, approved institutions)

Free for children up to the age of 6, disabled, and for residents in the communes of the Tuscan Archipelago.
